Word List Frenzy

Every year in mid-April, CV2 (a Canadian poetry journal) sponsors the 48-hour poem contest. At midnight of the appointed day, they email you 10 words. You have 48 hours to write a poem using those exact words. You cannot change tenses or go from singular to plural. You have to use them correctly according to dictionary definitions (although since it is a poetry contest, metaphorical usage seems to be acceptable). We always enter. It's fun and challenging -- they always throw in at least one really awful word -- last year's was "putative." This year the words weren't too bad, although I think Michael took issue with "pyrite."

So, for my first post on this new blog, I challenge you to write your best poem using these 10 words:

  • appliances
  • faked
  • satellite
  • ham
  • soaking
  • lapsed
  • stencil
  • mirrored
  • before
  • pyrite
Have fun! If we win, we'll post our poems here after the magazine publishes them!
